How to Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease happens as a result of plaque buildup between the gums and the teeth. The plaque carries bacteria and when allowed to fester in the mouth, it causes gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). If gingivitis is left untreated, it may lead to periodontitis and advanced periodontitis (gum recession and tooth loss).

Preventive measures

The following are safe practices that can be adapted to prevent gum disease:

  1. Brush and floss regularly: Brush a minimum of two times per day and make sure that the tip of your toothbrush cleans out all the nooks and crannies of your mouth. Also, once every day, use dental floss to remove food particles lodged between your teeth.
  1. Stop smoking: Smoking makes your teeth brown, it increases your chances of getting gum disease, and it has been known to make people’s mouth resistant to gum disease treatment.
  1. Visit a dentist regularly: Even if your mouth is healthy, it is good practice to visit a dental professional at least twice a year. Dentists can give you a thorough cleaning and ensure that your gums are disease-free.

Symptoms of gum disease

If you notice one (or more) of the following, there is a good chance that you are suffering from gum disease and need to visit the dentist immediately:

  1. Red or swollen gums.
  2. Gums that bleed easily when you brush.
  3. Loose teeth.
  4. Constantly bad breath.
  5. Pain while chewing.
  6. Overly sensitive teeth (to hot or cold food).
  7. Pus around the gums.

The presence of one of the following may signal gingivitis. You want to visit a dentist before it develops into periodontitis or advanced periodontitis.
